Rewriting the Corset as a Site of Body Dysmorphia, Healing, and Visible Mending

This piece explores body dysmorphia through the tension between what is held internally and what is expressed outwardly. The corset—historically a garment of restriction and control—becomes a physical and psychological container, holding fragmented, embroidered thoughts that reflect the intrusive and often hidden nature of dysmorphic perception. These stitched words are embedded into the structure of the garment, constrained and layered, mirroring the way such thoughts can become internalised and difficult to escape.

In contrast, free-flowing ribbons extend from the corset, carrying more affirmative and compassionate language. These elements move away from the body, unbound by structure, suggesting the possibility of self-acceptance, external support, and the gradual release of internal pressure.

Constructed from reclaimed textiles, with visible mending, raw edges, manipulated textiles, and layered surfaces, the work resists ideals of perfection. Instead, it embraces imperfection as a site of resilience. The body is presented not as something to be corrected, but as something negotiated—caught between restriction and release, silence and expression, fragmentation and healing.
