This corset project is deeply personal to me, both
conceptually and emotionally. It explores the connection between tradition and the present
through the language of circular fashion, focusing not only on material reuse, but on the
preservation of memory, craftsmanship, and inherited values.
Describe your corset in one sentence: A garment that balances strength and softness,
structure and memory, the industrial and the handmade.
The story behind the corset: The foundation of the corset is a once-beloved pair of denim
jeans — a material rooted in everyday life, durability, and contemporary identity. Denim carries
visible traces of time: fading, softening, and wear that speak quietly of lived moments. By
transforming this familiar fabric into a structured corset, I wanted to elevate the ordinary and
challenge the idea that garments lose their worth once their original function ends.
In dialogue with the denim, the corset incorporates hand-woven linen lace embroidered by my
grandmother. This textile embodies patience, care, and generational knowledge — qualities that
stand in strong contrast to the speed of today’s fashion industry. The lace was not created for
efficiency, but for meaning. Integrating it into this piece allows family heritage and traditional
craftsmanship to continue their story in a contemporary form.
The silhouette is inspired by classic corsetry, referencing historical structure and form, while
being reinterpreted for present-day wear. My intention was not to recreate the past, but to
translate it — to allow traditional values to exist within a modern visual language.
This corset functions as a wearable narrative. It reflects how clothing can act as a bridge
between generations, carrying emotional weight alongside aesthetic intention. Through the
combination of denim and ancestral lace, the piece symbolically unites personal history with
contemporary design, suggesting that sustainability is not only about recycling materials, but
also about honoring stories and skills worth carrying forward.
