Short introduction about yourself: Hi I’m Shania an art student from Leeds. My style is to challenge the bounds of art and societies expectations through kitsch.
Describe your corset in one sentence: Gaudy and exuberant in the best way
The story behind the corset: My family’s collection of Royal Dalton Dolls inspired my corset, and I started talking to my art teacher and about how they are quite kitsch. This lead on to a discussion about kitsch inspired art.
I’m happy with how everything turned out.
Before the corset was fast fashion, but now by reimagining it and sourcing second hand elements, I have created a fun and provocative outcome. It means a chance for me to express myself and my style sustainably and create a one-of-a-kind piece.
“Art and passion.” the quote on the corset. I felt I resonated with that quote more because art is passion and passion is art. I created these using vintage fabric and fabric I already had, then used vintage wooden printing blocks and printing ink for the letters.
The kitsch inspired baby snail I created for the corset revival project is my favoured part which I added to my corset. I created it using an old toy from the charity shop and some clay for the shell, which I had left over from a previous project.
